High-Protein Asian Meal Prep in Orange County: What 30g+ Actually Looks Like

High-Protein Asian Meal Prep in Orange County: What 30g+ Actually Looks Like

If you have ever tracked macros, you know the drill. Chicken breast, broccoli, rice, repeat. Somewhere along the way, "eating for protein" turned into "stop eating the food you actually like" — and for a lot of us in Orange County and LA, the food we actually like is Asian.

The assumption underneath that is simple: Asian food means rice and noodles, so it must be high in carbs and low in protein.

We publish a rotating menu every week, and every dish on it carries its calories, carbs, protein and fat right on the label. So instead of arguing about the assumption, here are the actual numbers from our current menu.

The numbers, from this week's menu

These are the exact macros printed on the packaging. Nothing rounded up, nothing estimated.

Dish Calories Carbs Protein Fat
Yuzu Beef Brisket Rice Bowl 570 58g 40g 20g
Hong Kong Style Char Siu Rice 620 62g 38g 22g
Mapo Tofu Beef Pasta 620 62g 30g 24g
Spicy Marinated Shrimp Ceviche Salad 351 2g 36g 23g
Spicy Marinated Sea Snail Salad 380 5g 30g 18g

A rice bowl with 40g of protein is not a compromise. It is roughly what you would get from a 6oz chicken breast, except it is char siu, or brisket in yuzu ponzu, and you did not cook it.

And look at the two salads. 36g of protein in 2g of carbs. Those are Chinese cold appetizers — 捞汁 style, marinated shrimp and sliced sea snail. They have been on Chinese tables for decades. Nobody markets them as "low carb high protein," but that is exactly what they are.

The part that surprises people: dessert

This is the one that makes people look twice. Our yogurt bowls are the highest-protein items on the menu after the rice bowls.

Yogurt bowl Calories Carbs Protein Fat
Dubai Chocolate 624 57g 36g 28g
Panda Oreo 586 62g 35g 22g
Rosy Grape Pistachio 496 53g 35g 16g
Matcha Melon & Grape 539 58g 34g 19g
Mango Pomelo Sago 508 66g 34g 12g
Blue Spirulina & Berry 478 55g 33g 14g
Lychee Blueberry 431 42g 32g 15g
Thick Greek Yogurt Jar 370 40g 30g 10g

They are built on thick Greek yogurt, which is where the protein comes from. A Dubai chocolate bowl at 36g of protein has more protein than most of what gets sold as a "protein snack," and it tastes like dessert because it is dessert.

If you want the same thing at a smaller size, the Mini Yogurt Bowl is 250 calories with 25g of protein.

How to actually build a week out of this

Our box is à la carte — you pick the dishes, not a fixed plan. So here is how people use the macro labels in practice.

If you are training and want protein high

Anchor on the rice bowls. Yuzu Beef Brisket (40g) and Char Siu (38g) are the two highest. Add a yogurt bowl as the post-workout item instead of a shake — the Dubai Chocolate is 36g.

If you are watching carbs

The marinated seafood salads are the outlier on this menu. Shrimp ceviche is 2g of carbs and 36g of protein. Sea snail is 5g and 30g. Pair either one with a Thick Greek Yogurt Jar (40g carbs, 30g protein) and you have a day that lands high on protein without a rice bowl in sight.

If you just want to stop thinking about it

Pick seven dishes you actually want to eat and read the labels afterward. That is the whole point of putting the numbers on the box — you are not doing math before you order, you are just able to check.

Where the numbers come from

Every dish is cooked fresh each week by our partner restaurant kitchens here in Orange County, and the macro panel is printed on the label of every container along with the refrigeration and freezer windows.

The menu rotates weekly, so the exact dishes above will change. What does not change is that the numbers are on the box. You can browse everything we have ever made — with macros on each — in our Dish Library.
